Gwalior: A famous historical city of India

Gwalior is the heritage capital of Madhya Pradesh in the eyes of many. Gwalior’s history has been given its present shape after a long set of reigns by different Rajput clans. Of these the important clans were of Tomars and Kacchawahas. The name Gwalior is derived from the name of a saint Gwalipa. Legend has it that this saint cured a famous clan leader of leprosy. This leader established Gwalior and his name happens to be Suraj Sen.

Gwalior is a big place with an area of about 362 sq. kms. The population of this city is about 1,123,505. Gwalior is gifted with numerous places that captivate the tourists. This place is also famous because it is the perfect place to witness the mixture of eastern and western cultures of the past. The greatest of architectural creations of the past era could be seen in this city. Gwalior also has many temples and religious destinations. This is the reason that this place is frequented by many tourists. These temples have basically been created in veneration to various gods and goddesses of Hindu mythology. These temples are famous not only because of the many myths and legends attached to them but also because it is education centre for many architects. The students and admirers of architecture come to study these masterpieces.

Gwalior also has a prominent place in the freedom struggle of India with the likes of Rani Lakshmibai contributing to the movement. This city is also an educational hub because of the many famous colleges and schools present over here. Gwalior is also placed quite prominently. It is at a distance of 115 kms from Agra. Delhi, the capital of India is also quite close to it thereby making it all the more accessible. Thus Gwalior is the ideal place to visit if one wants to feel the rich and royal history and culture of India.
