The Sanskrit words kharjura meaning date palm and vahaka meaning one who carries together have led to the present name of this city that is Khajuraho. There are many myths and legends related to Khajuraho that have gained popularity over time. Khajuraho was an important place under the rule of the Chandelas. Many of the beautifully built temples in Khajuraho can be attributed to the Chandelas. Chandelas built many temples during 950 to 1150. A very popular legend among the people is that the king of Khajuraho Chandravarman was the son of Moon God and Hemvati, the daughter of royal priest of Kashi.
The temples of Khajuraho are made of sandstone are immensely significant. The art and architecture of these temples are sexual in nature. The carvings are indicative of tantric sexual practices. Western, southern and eastern are the three groups into which the temples of this city are divided. The method of construction employed to build these temples is also very interesting. The stones used in their construction were put together and held firmly by gravity. The most famous temples of Khajuraho are Varaha, Lakshaman, Devi Jagdambi, Javari and Adinath.
